How to Store Furniture Properly: Tips from Killeen’s Top-Rated Storage Facility

Published by Next Storage | Killeen, TX

Storing furniture might seem straightforward — just move it into a unit and close the door. But how you prepare and store furniture can make the difference between items that come out in perfect condition and items that are damaged, stained, or warped beyond repair. This guide covers everything you need to know about storing furniture safely, especially in the Central Texas climate.

Step 1: Clean Everything Before Storage

Before placing any furniture in storage, give every piece a thorough cleaning. Dust, crumbs, and residue left on surfaces can attract pests and cause stains that set over time. Wipe down wood furniture with a damp cloth and apply a light coat of furniture polish to protect the finish. Vacuum upholstered pieces including underneath cushions. Clean leather with an appropriate leather conditioner. For metal furniture, wipe down surfaces to remove fingerprints and moisture that could lead to rust.

Step 2: Disassemble What You Can

If furniture can be taken apart, disassemble it. Remove table legs, take bed frames apart, and separate shelving units. This serves two purposes: it reduces the footprint so you can use a smaller, less expensive unit, and it prevents damage from pieces bumping into each other during the move. Keep all hardware (screws, bolts, cam locks) in labeled plastic bags and tape them to the corresponding furniture piece.

Step 3: Wrap and Protect

Use moving blankets, furniture pads, or old sheets to wrap wood furniture and prevent scratches. For upholstered items, fabric covers or old bedsheets work well. Avoid wrapping furniture in plastic wrap or plastic sheeting — plastic traps moisture and creates condensation that leads to mold and mildew, especially in non-climate-controlled environments. Bubble wrap is fine for glass surfaces and fragile components, but use breathable covers for the rest.

Step 4: Choose Climate Controlled Storage

This is arguably the most important decision you’ll make when storing furniture in Central Texas. Summer temperatures in Killeen regularly exceed 100°F, and the inside of a non-climate unit can get significantly hotter. Wood expands and contracts with temperature changes, causing warping, cracking, and joint failure. Leather dries out and cracks. Fabric develops mildew. Veneer peels and separates.

Our climate controlled units maintain temperatures between 55°F and 85°F with regulated creating a stable environment that protects your furniture just like the inside of your home.

Step 5: Organize Your Unit Strategically

Place heavier items like dressers, bookshelves, and tables along the walls and toward the back of the unit. Couches can be stored on end to save floor space — just make sure they’re stable and won’t tip. Leave a walkway down the center so you can access items without having to unload the entire unit. If stacking items on top of furniture, put the heaviest pieces on the bottom and distribute weight evenly. Never stack heavy boxes directly on upholstered surfaces.

If you’re not sure how much space you need, our size guide can help you visualize different unit sizes and match them to typical furniture sets.
