Moving to Killeen, TX: What to Expect and How to Prepare

Published by Next Storage | Killeen, TX

Whether you’re relocating to Killeen for a military assignment at Fort Hood, a civilian job, or a fresh start in an affordable Texas city, there’s a lot to know before you arrive. Killeen is the largest city in Bell County with a population of approximately 160,000 residents, and it serves as the economic hub for a metro area that includes Harker Heights, Copperas Cove, Nolanville, and Belton.

Cost of Living

One of Killeen’s biggest draws is affordability. The cost of living is significantly below the national average, and housing costs in particular are well below what you’d find in Austin (just 65 miles south), San Antonio, or Dallas-Fort Worth. Whether you’re renting or buying, you’ll find that your dollar goes further in Killeen. Groceries, utilities, and everyday expenses are also generally lower than average for Texas.

Neighborhoods to Consider

Killeen has diverse neighborhoods suited to different preferences and budgets. South Killeen near the Heights Road corridor is popular with families for its newer construction and proximity to schools. The Clear Creek area in north Killeen offers quick access to Fort Hood and is where our storage facility is located. Harker Heights, while technically a separate city, borders Killeen’s east side and is favored for its schools, parks, and retail along FM 2410. For those who prefer a more rural feel, Nolanville and Belton offer smaller-town living within an easy commute.

Weather and Climate

Central Texas weather is characterized by hot summers and mild winters. From June through September, expect daytime highs regularly above 100°F. Winters are generally mild with occasional cold fronts that can bring temperatures into the 30s. Spring is beautiful but can include severe weather, including thunderstorms and the occasional tornado watch. If you’re coming from a cooler climate, the summer heat will be the biggest adjustment. This is also why climate controlled storage is so important for protecting your belongings in this area.

Things to Do

Despite its reputation as primarily a military town, Killeen and the surrounding area offer plenty of recreation. Belton Lake and Stillhouse Hollow Lake are within 30 minutes for boating, fishing, and camping. Dana Peak Park in Harker Heights has trails for hiking and mountain biking. The Vive Les Arts Theatre is a community theater with a strong following. Killeen’s restaurant scene has diversified considerably in recent years, with options ranging from Korean and Japanese to barbecue and Tex-Mex. Austin’s live music, dining, and nightlife are about an hour south on I-35.

Storage During Your Move

Almost every relocation involves a gap between when your belongings arrive and when you’re fully settled. Whether you’re waiting for housing to become available, staging a home for sale at your previous location, or simply need time to sort through boxes, a storage unit provides valuable flexibility during the transition.
